Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Paul Konerko shined in the spotlight in more ways than one, hitting a homer and driving in two runs on his own Bobblehead Doll night to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Konerko, who struggled mightily in the first half with a .197 average, also had an RBI single in the third inning for his 10th multi-hit game of the season. In his last five games, the slugger is 9-for-22. "Maybe my timing is back," Konerko said. "I know I've struggled, fans know I've struggled, and it's been tough for everybody. The toughest part for me is that I couldn't help my team." The White Sox got on the scoreboard in the third against Tigers starter Matt Roney (1-4) with a three-run rally capped by Konerko's base hit. After Roberto Alomar drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, Konerko made it 5-0 with his sixth homer in the fifth. "He's swinging the bat very well," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said. "Paul is the type of guy, when he is hitting the ball well, he adds a whole other dimension to our offense. Hopefully he can continue to swing the bat and that's something we're very much looking forward to in the second half of the season." Half of Konerko's home runs have come in July. The White Sox are 5-1 when he homers. Chicago snapped an embarrassing four-game losing streak against Detroit, which has the worst record in the major leagues. The Tigers got all their runs against White Sox starter Mark Buehrle (8-10) in the seventh, but Chicago added some insurance on a two-run double by Carlos Lee in the eighth. "We battled back in this game and I thought we would have had a chance if we'd have kept it at 5-4," Tigers manager Alan Trammell said. "They have a potent lineup, and when you're facing them, you'd better keep your fingers crossed." Chicago needed that insurance when Damaso Marte gave up a homer to Carlos Pena leading off the ninth. Tom Gordon came on to finish the inning and pick up his fourth save. In 6 2/3 innings, Buehrle allowed 10 hits but walked only one. The southpaw struck out five en route to winning his sixth straight decision. In two starts against the Tigers this season, Buehrle is 2-0 with an 0.61 ERA. In his career, he is 8-4 with a 1.88 ERA against Detroit. Roney went five innings, allowing five runs and nine hits. The righthander struck out one and walked three. "It wasn't my night tonight at all," Roney said. "I didn't have a real good feel for things and my command was a little off. I thought we had a shot at it once we got it close, but I take the fall for giving up the early runs." The Tigers, who came into the game having hit into a major league-low 51 double plays, bounced into three and flied into another.
